Abstract
Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM), in Indonesian was known as “congek”, is an ear disease that commonly found in developing countries. This chronic middle ear infection condition is accompanied by perforation of the tympanic membrane and fluid leakage in the form of watery, clear, thick, or even pus that comes out continuously or intermittently for 2 months or more. This study was to analyze the relationship between the size of the tympanic membrane perforation area with the hearing threshold in CSOM patients. This is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the medical records of Kaliwates General Hospital during 2019-2020. The samples in this study were 15 ears from 12 CSOM patients from the ENT department. Data analysis was performed by Pearson correlation test. The results showed that the size of the tympanic membrane perforation area was related to the hearing threshold value (p-value = 0.004) and had a moderate degree of correlation (r = 0.654). Therefore, the larger the perforation of the tympanic membrane, the more difficult the patient to hear.
